Take a look, it's in a book...

Our library, which happens to be a few blocks down the street, has been closed for awhile for re-modeling and is set to open this coming weekend. I am very excited! I had just finally gotten around to getting a new library card with my new name (yes, it took me a year and a half!) right when it closed. I've gone to another branch a few times, but it's just not as convenient--since I drive past ours nearly every time I go somewhere--or as familiar. I've been going to this one since the day it opened when I was 5--my old card was even from then, 5 year-old signature and all. (My dad took me to the grand opening, there was a person dressed like the Cat in the Hat, we promptly fled.)

So, what I need help with is what to read. I'll pretty much read anything--fiction is my favorite, but I like to balance it out with other stuff. I have a short list to start back with, but I read really fast and with 2 days off plus the weekend, I can plow through books when I'm in the mood and I end up running out of ideas quickly. What have you been reading lately? What are your top books so far this year, or last year? Any suggestions would be great!

Have you read the Ladies #1 Detective Agency series? It might not sound good, but they are sweet reads. They are based in Africa and be sure to start at the first one.

Reading Rainbow! Used to LOVE that show!! My recs really depend on what you're into. So I'll give you a little of everything:

bio:
- "John Adams" by David McCullough (inspired the HBO miniseries that won 50 million awards)

historical fiction:
- "1776" by David McCullough

historical non-fiction:
- "A Team of Rivals" (about Lincoln's cabinet, and how they really didn't like each other, but made an awesome team)
- "The Longest Night: A Military History of the Civil War" by David Eicher

chick lit:
- "Last Chance Saloon" by Marian Keyes
- anything by Jane Green, especially "Jemima J"
- "The Devil Wears Prada" by Lauren Weisberger(wayy better than the movie)

general fiction:
- "Life of Pi" by Yann Martel
- "Eat, Pray, Love" by Elizabeth Gilbert
- "The Great Gatsby" by F. Scott Fitzgerald (my most favorite book)
- "The Poisonwood Bible" by Barbara Kingsolver

general nonfiction:
"The Majic Bus, An American Odyssey" by Douglas Brinkley (about a college class that basically spends a semester on the road in a converted bus touring the US)

travel writing:
- anything by Peter Mayle (I've read "A Year in Provence" and "Toujours Provence")
- "The Conde Nast Traveler Book of Unforgettable Journeys"

whew... let me think of some more and I'll get back with you. Those are my favorites from the last few years off the top of my head...

Bek---I love your list of books on your blog, such a great resource for finding things to read! And oh yeah, I loved the Twilight books...I read all 4 in 3 days. Hehe. Harry Potter is awesome too. We read them on our honeymoon. (not ALL of them) Yeah, we're geeky.

Christina--wow, thanks! I'll have to add some of those to my list for sure! I love historical stuff!
